Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA)

A strong reminder that APRA's code of ethics for research should be applied when using any research tool.

I feel it is especially important to issue this reminder in light of the relatively new application of relationship mapping as it relates to proactive prospect identification.

Specifically, not all relationships are relevant to development work. Always employ the APRA ethics guidelines when disseminating any information.

About the author of this site:

My name is David Broussard. I am a full-time prospect researcher who has worked in development since 1997.

My current role is probably similar to many prospect researchers: I do reactive research most of the time; I help coordinate the prospect management meetings; I do a lot of work trying to keep everyone coded correctly in our database so that our reports will have meaning; and,

I keep hearing the same things at prospect management meetings:

"How can we get into see Mr. X?"

"Does anyone know Mrs. Y?"

"I heard that XYZ Foundation/Company is giving to groups like ours - do we know anyone there?"

While I had a number of tools available to me to summarize wealth information, get stock holdings, rate prospects, and so on, the missing piece was a tool to answer those questions.

The "connections to others" piece of prospect research was ALWAYS a painstaking process of compiling data from web findings, Social Networking site entries, Inner Circle people (for us WealthEngine users) and so forth. And even then, we ended up with lists of people to hand out. Peer screenings went the same way. List after list given to Development Officers, Trustees, Committee Members, volunteers, etc. It got the job done but it was messy!

Then, I heard about relationship mapping.

The first few sites I used were, well, pretty useless. None of my prospects were in their data, the maps were hard to navigate, but I saw how the concept could be REALLY useful if it was developed - perhaps the next revolution in prospect research.

So, I set out to find all the relationship mapping services available today. And, after reviewing all of the ones I found, I believe that IntellectSpace (MarketVisual) is the best option for prospect researchers. As such, I became an independent representative to share this product with researchers.

After reading the review for MarketVisual, I invite you test it out personally and, should you purchase any maps, use Promo Code RMR1 for a 5% discount!
